It is estimated that around 80% of software development projects world-wide finish either late, over budget, both late and over budget, or worse still are never actually completed.
There are many factors that can affect the success or otherwise of a project. Some of the more important factors often cited are: lack of user involvement; incomplete or inaccurate user requirements; scope creep due to lack of change control; inadequate risk management; lack of system testing; poor user acceptance testing; and unrealistic deadlines. Some projects might seem successful, having been delivered on time and on budget, but are later discovered not to be so as the lack of user acceptance testing and a failure to properly commission a system fail to reveal fundamental flaws until after the system goes live, often resulting in endless rounds of patches and work-arounds.
The fundamental issue behind all of these factors is not the factors themselves, but the lack of a project management methodology and system to manage these factors. Scope creep, for example, occurs in most software development projects, but it is the failure to properly manage the scope creep that is the issue. The same can be said of other common factors behind project failures.
Presence Systems uses both the Unified Process software development methodology, and the software project management methodology within it. The Unified Process follows the "incremental and iterative development" approach rather than the older "waterfall" approach and is considered to be world's best practice. The Unified Process is based on, and very similar to, the more general project management methodology the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) from the Project Management Institute.
Presence Systems not only uses this methodology for the management of all projects we undertake on behalf of clients, but is also able to offer project management and project management consulting services including:
Presence Systems is a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI), a world-wide organisation promoting excellence in project management.
